I'm Lindsay Mahaffey, and I serve on the Wake County Board of Education for District 8; which includes parts of Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina and New Hill. I was first elected to the board in 2016.

I bring a broad perspective to the Board of Education -having been an educator in two different countries, teaching multiple disciplines, a Master’s Degree in teaching, and working in communities with varying needs and resources.  On the Wake County Board of Education I serve you not only with the perspective of an educator -- bringing my advanced knowledge of pedagogy, and education policy; but also as the mother of three children, who have been enrolled in Wake County Public Schools since kindergarten. I have a vested interest in the success of our students, our teachers and our community. My family chose to live in Wake County primarily because of its diverse county wide school system and its supportive, family friendly community.

There can be a great disconnect between education policy and what goes on in the classroom. I continue to work hard to bridge that gap, and bring the perspective of a teacher and a parent of elementary, middle & high school students. This work includes keeping our students at the center of all that we do, working to support our teachers & all who support our students, and partnering with our families and our broader community in Wake County.

My family has experienced the rapid growth of our community firsthand. In kindergarten, my eldest was placed in a class with no teacher. So many students had enrolled over the summer that a new class had to be created. We have also struggled with transportation, and student assignment. As a parent I have experience with both the 504 & IEP processes - - these experiences add to my lens as a school board member.

For the sake of our innovative, resource rich, and, growing county, we need to address problems head on. Doing so will strengthen our community. Join me in this important conversation about the education of our children, and the future of our community.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me as a candidate. I humbly ask for your vote this November or during early voting. - Lindsay
